360 Sustainability

RESPONSIBILITY

RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS

Our "360 Sustainability" strategy respects the well-being of the environment, people and animals and covers the entire life cycle of the product, from raw materials through production to disposal after use.

It commits us and requires our partners to respect human rights in a way that ensures equality for all workers. We also demand respect for animal rights. We demand that our suppliers respect the environment and act ecologically, and commit to sustainable production practices with us.

365 SUSTAINABILITY

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

At BYPIAS, we implement our environmental responsibility in all our company's activities. We use natural resources, energy and materials sparingly and efficiently. To meet increasing environmental requirements, we actively develop new sustainable materials and use new environmentally friendly technologies so that our requirements for efficient use of water, correct treatment of waste water and responsible waste disposal are met.

We monitor and systematically reduce the carbon footprint of our operations, and we demand the same from our manufacturers and other suppliers. We are involved in climate initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

We implement our environmental responsibility in all our operations and use natural resources, energy and materials sparingly and efficiently. We monitor the carbon footprint of our operations. Our climate action measures have enabled us to systematically reduce our CO2 emissions, both in our own operations and in our production chain.

PACKAGING AND TRANSPORT MATERIAL

We use packaging materials that are fully reusable and recyclable to transport our products from the manufacturers to the warehouse. To reduce waste, we have introduced pallet transport, where products are transported without any packaging at all. These pallet transports are used, for example, for trade fairs. We also make use of reusable fibre sacks to transport products between the warehouse and the stores.

For online deliveries, we use plastic bags made from renewable or recycled materials. Last year, we increased our marketing efforts to encourage our e-commerce customers to order e-commerce deliveries for collection from our stores. This gives customers the opportunity to try on clothes before making a purchase decision. This has reduced the return rate of products, as well as the carbon footprint of mailing products.

In stores, we pack products in paper bags made from renewable or recycled materials, which are protected with protective paper made from renewable or recycled materials.

These measures have enabled us to reduce the use of packaging and transport materials, while increasing the volume of our operations.

WASTE

We actively monitor the environmental impact of our waste.
Although our volume of activity is growing rapidly, we are committed to continuously reducing the amount of waste we produce and the environmental impact it has. Our efforts have been effective in reducing our waste volumes and the CO2 emissions they generate. We have challenged ourselves to develop new waste reduction measures.

To name a few:

  • Our accounting is completely paperless
  • We reuse all textile trimming waste from our production to make hairpins and other small products, for craftspeople to make a living, and for kindergartens to use as craft materials
  • We divert all defective products and production batches for reuse by charity as they are

FURNITURE AND PRINTED MATTER

All the furniture in our stores, like all the furniture in our company's premises, is made from recycled materials. All our printed products such as catalogues, labels, etc. are domestic. They are made from Finnish raw materials in Finnish printing houses.

We also encourage our customers in every way possible to contribute to sustainability and reduce their environmental impact, for example by extending the life of their clothes by maintaining and washing them according to the care instructions. On our website you will find material declarations and detailed care instructions for our products. All our garments can be washed in water, so there is no need for environmentally harmful dry cleaning. Consumers can also reduce the environmental impact of the clothes they buy by using eco-labelled and phosphate-free detergents and avoiding the use of tumble dryers.

Consumers who shop online are encouraged to order online deliveries to our stores, where they can try on the products they have ordered before making a final purchase decision. In this way, we avoid the postage associated with exchanging products, while allowing customers to contribute to reducing the carbon footprint associated with packaging and transporting products.

RE-USE ja RETURN

We maintain a BYPIAS Second Hand Facebook group, where consumers can recycle BYPIAS clothes they no longer wear or buy recycled clothes for themselves. The group already has over 30 000 members.

RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION CHAIN

BYPIAS production is sustainable and responsible across the board. This means that manufacturers do not use chemicals that are harmful to the environment and that their working conditions are safe and their workers' rights are respected.

We have long and lasting working relationships with every manufacturer. BYPIAS garments are largely produced domestically and locally in small sewing factories. We have been working with the Estonian sewing factories since their establishment. We have been involved in setting up sewing mills for our linen products in Estonia, with which we have cooperated since their establishment and this cooperation has continued uninterrupted ever since.

Our knitted and hosiery products are also assembled in Estonia in a sewing mill that we helped to set up and with which we have continued to cooperate ever since.
Estonian manufacturers have developed and grown with us. We have agreed with them on rules that are in line with our ethical values and we follow their actions as our own. We monitor the activities of our Estonian manufacturers by meeting them all at least every two weeks.

In Italy, we have concentrated our production on a small limited number of northern Italian manufacturers with whom we have long-established working relationships and whose activities are monitored by our local production supervisor. All of our Italian manufacturers are SMETA-4-Pillar audited and none of them have been found to be objectionable in any area of ethics. The cooperation with Italian manufacturers has continued uninterrupted with each manufacturer since the beginning.

MATERIALS

We know and monitor the origin of the raw materials used in our products, their cultivation and production processes to ensure that our products are produced in accordance with our ecological and ethical principles. We aim to minimise our carbon footprint and use certified materials.

BYPIAS LINEN

The core product of our BYPIAS brand is flax, which is made from raw material into yarn in France, a low-risk country. Our flax fibre originates from the EU and is European Flax certified. The yarn manufacturer is a member of Masters of Linen, which guarantees that the flax fibre in our products is GMO-free, free of artificial irrigation and free of chemicals that are harmful to the environment and health. It is completely biodegradable.

The producers involved in the manufacture of our flax products comply with the legislation of their respective countries. To ensure this, the entire production chain complies with the European Chemicals Regulation, REACH, which ensures that no harmful chemicals are used at any stage of production.

BYPIAS linen is made from yarn into fabric and from there into finished products in the local Baltic region. Bohemiana linen and Essentials linen knitwear are manufactured in Italy.

BYPIAS BAMBOO

The raw material of the BYPIAS-Bamboo collection is 93/7 bamboo/elastane. Bamboo tricot is a sustainable material made from yarn into a finished product in Estonia.

Bamboo is a fast-growing and organic food plant. It regenerates naturally and does not require irrigation, fertilisers or pesticides. The bamboo plant is very efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide and at the same time produces a lot of oxygen. Bamboo fibre decomposes and decomposes quickly.

We use OEKO-TEX Standard minimum 100 Class 1 certified materials in the manufacture of our BYPIAS products. This ensures that the products are free of harmful chemicals and are safe to use for direct-to-skin garments.

Animal fibres

The merino wool, mohair, cashmere and alpaca fibres in our knitwear are mainly sourced from New Zealand, where there is strict legislation on the treatment of all animal fibre-producing animals, including merino sheep and mohair and cashmere goats and alpacas, including a ban on painful mulesing.
In addition, manufacturers of merino wool, mohair, cashmere and alpaca yarns meet the requirements of the OEKO-TEX Standard 100.

Other clothing materials

In addition to linen, Bohemiana and Perfect Jeans products are made from mohair, silk, viscose, cotton and blends of these materials with each other and with man-made fibres such as elastane and polyamide.

The materials used in our products are accompanied by detailed material data sheets, which provide information on the raw materials, as well as care instructions for each material.

Decorative and other brands' products

Our range of interior design products includes old vintage items, wood, cane and bamboo products and furniture, as well as linen, wool and jute textiles. The products are handcrafted in two small, familiar family businesses in India; textiles in one and other furnishing products in the other. Our interior design range also includes products from other companies, such as handcrafted home furnishings in Indonesia and cotton textiles from Greece.

We also sell a carefully and thoughtfully selected range of a few other brands, shoes and accessories. They are made in the EU and complement our interior design products with a relaxed, harmonious hygge style.

365 SUSTAINABILITY

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

At BYPIAS, social responsibility covers our own staff, as well as all the people we affect during the life cycle of our products, from raw materials to finished products, through to their sale and use.

We carefully select the manufacturers of our products to ensure that the working conditions in their production facilities are humane and safe, and that their workers' rights are respected. We encourage our manufacturers and other subcontractors to price their products so that they get a good enough price for their products to guarantee their workers a living wage and other working conditions that meet our ethical guidelines.

We have zero tolerance for child labour and forced labour, do not tolerate illegal overtime and do not compromise on safe working conditions.
All our products are manufactured in factories with which we have a long-standing partnership. This long and lasting relationship makes it easy for us to regularly monitor manufacturers' compliance with the agreed rules that reflect our values. We concentrate our production on a limited number of subcontractors and require all those involved in the manufacture of our products to act in accordance with our values.

At BYPIAS, we offer an open working atmosphere in which every BYPIAS employee has the opportunity to make a difference. We treat our employees equally and our light hierarchy makes communication with our employees easy and effortless.
